Prosper, TX — Under the bright lights of Children’s Health Stadium in Prosper, the Walnut Grove Wildcats delivered a Halloween night victory to remember — defeating the Melissa Cardinals 38–35 to secure back-to-back District 4-5A Division II championships in only their second varsity season.

The win once again showcased Walnut Grove’s growth, grit, and knack for shining in high-stakes moments.

Back-and-Forth Battle Sets Dramatic Tone

Both offenses got rolling early, trading touchdowns and big plays throughout the opening quarters. A determined Wildcats scoring drive in the second quarter pushed them ahead, but Melissa responded swiftly with a deep touchdown pass to pull even before halftime — setting up a second-half showdown worthy of the district title on the line.

Momentum Shifts in Wildcats’ Favor

The Wildcats struck first after the break, capitalizing on a #DarkAlleyDefense takeaway that turned into points and built a double-digit lead. Walnut Grove’s execution in all three phases kept Melissa off balance as the Wildcats controlled much of the third quarter.

Even as the Cardinals surged with a late rally, Walnut Grove’s #SmashTheGas offense pieced together a clock-draining march that ended in what proved to be the decisive touchdown.

Late Drama Seals It

Melissa found the end zone again in the final minutes, trimming the gap to just three points and forcing tension to spike across the stadium. With the game — and the district crown — hanging in the balance, Walnut Grove’s hands team calmly secured the ensuing onside kick to close out the Halloween thriller.

Head Coach Tommy Allison summed up the magnitude of the moment:

Really proud for our kids and for our school. It’s pretty cool. These kids have worked really hard in a matter of two years.
